How to Compress a Video for Email

To email a large video, compress it in your browser with a client-side tool: open MediaStand's video compressor, drop the file, keep the Fast 720p preset, and download the result — usually a fraction of the original size and well under Gmail's or Outlook's 25 MB attachment limit. Nothing is uploaded during compression.

Gmail and Outlook cap attachments around 25 MB, and a one-minute phone video blows past that easily. You do not need an editor or an account with some upload service: a browser-based compressor re-encodes the video on your own machine, so it is private, free and fast.

Why videos are too big for email

Phones record at high resolution and high bitrate: a minute of 4K footage can weigh 300-400 MB, and even 1080p commonly lands at 60-130 MB per minute. Email providers reject most of that — Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo all cap attachments at roughly 25 MB. Shrinking the file means reducing resolution and bitrate, which is exactly what a compressor does.

Still too big? Three levers

If the compressed file is still over the limit: (1) switch the preset to Smallest 480p — fine for talking-head or screen content; (2) trim the video first so you only send the part that matters; (3) for multi-minute videos, consider splitting into parts and sending two emails. Each lever multiplies the savings of the others.

Why in-browser beats upload services

Upload-based compressors send your footage to someone else's server: slower (upload + download), size-capped, and your private video sits on infrastructure you do not control. Client-side compression keeps the file on your machine end to end — the only thing that travels is the email you finally send.

Our own numbers

On 22 July 2026 we compressed a 1.47 GB, 90-minute 1600x900 H.264 film on the hardware path (Chrome, Windows 11): the streaming mode wrote a 1.16 GB output directly to disk in about 16 minutes — a 21% reduction with the bitrate cap keeping quality near the source. Short phone clips finish in seconds; the same engine simply has less to chew.

What size should I aim for?

Under 20 MB to be safe — providers count encoding overhead, so a 24.9 MB file can still bounce. The Fast 720p preset usually gets a short clip far below that.

Will the recipient notice the quality drop?

For email viewing, rarely. 720p at a sane bitrate looks crisp on phones and laptops; the difference only shows on large screens at full-screen playback.
